For a book written in 1976 it was a very easy read. It's not particularly long, and it covers a topic I really haven't delved too much about: slavery in America's south. It does this through episodes where Dana mysteriously travels back in time from the "present" day (which is like the 1970s) back to when slavery was rampant. A great combination of sci-fi and historical fiction.

We often feel removed from history, especially when it is frequently reduced to stats and stories of heroism and escape. Butler uses time travel to force us, through a 20th Century protagonist, to feel the trauma and constant fear that slavery created.
