There were aspects of this book that really bucked expectations, and I enjoyed that. However, the characters were mostly unlikable. In particular, I found the female characters one-dimensional and almost caricatures of what were considered "feminine qualities" at the time this book was written. In a book where I thought the premise and main ideas aged well, the attitude towards women and underdeveloped female characters stick out like sore thumbs.

The plot was fine, but the writing was so.. slow. I had read another one of Nevil Shute's books, and he is a bit of a "extremely slow burn" type writer.
I get he was trying to set out the slow pace of life, but it was just too slow. He overemphasized some plot points and under-delivered on others.
