Fantastic book that I probably wouldn't have read if it weren't for my book club.
I loved Tara's writing style, and she was able to convey such a sense of naviety at the beginning, so that the reader learns about the weirdness of her childhood just as she is. I liked how she was able to describe so many strange things that happened to her and her family without overtly trying to tell us they were strange, it was only upon reflection that you go "WTF?".

I expected this to be a ridiculous and crazy account of a cult family, but it really seemed like just an extreme example of families I grew up with. My family is nothing like the Westovers, but I know families like them: the mother obsessed with pseudoscience, the home-schooled ultra-religious kids (who I didn't know well... they didn't go to school), the tight-knit rural religious community, the survivors of domestic abuse who never leave, and those who do.
