Not that great as a romance, but the story of Stephen was really interesting, pretty heartbreaking and incredibly intense. Was a very powerful portrayal of the Great War, for which it deserves its accolades. The war scenes deserve particular mention; they were so intense I needed to take breaks after they had finished. The loss of life and just sheer length of the war came across. Characters were killed off with a single sentence, which really made it feel more real.
