When the audio started, and I heard that the reader was Martha Plimpton, I almost didn't listen. As an actress, she kinda sorta bugs me. However, I gave her a chance... and boy am I glad I did. Not only was this a phenomenal book, Plimpton was a PERFECT fit to read this book. She was great, nothing like any character I've ever seen her play on TV. This was a moving story about a split second decision which changes lives. It was fast moving, and I liked how the story jumped ahead years, and decades. The resolution was unexpected. The characters were real and moving to me.
I especially liked Caroline and her determination (and days spent researching in the library) to give Phoebe every advantage.

This was a beautifully written story about motherhood, love, and forgiveness.
The author did a wonderful job in developing her characters, and in having them mature throughout the timeframe of the book. Each character evolved in a believable way; gradually as I read, but dramatically over the course of the book.
