Just as January inadvertently became my month for end of life memoirs, I inadvertently commemorated African American History Month with the February choices of two of my GR book clubs and ended up reading Toni Morrison’s
Beloved
and Alice Walker’s The Color Purple back to back. Transitioning from one to the other was a bit of an adjustment because, ironically, Toni Morrison’s prose is much more purple than Celie’s ungrammatical narration. But different as the two books are, I think I detecte
