The story is set at multiple places: it started near the Salinas river, a few miles south from Soledad, California. But the majority of the story is set at a ranch in Soledad, California. That was because the story was set during the Great Depression of the 1930s and the best way to earn money was to work at that ranch.
The theme of this book is definitely focused on friendships and the importance of those friendships. The theme of this book is definitely focused on friendships and the importance of those friendships. Another important thing what was mentioned in the book was that you should believe in yourself, do what you want to do. In this case that was the ability to become rich, the American Dream. That was the goal in this book, combining friendship and the American Dream to reach something successful.
George and Lennie are the main characters in the story, I will describe both of them:
• George is a smart man in contrast to Lennie. He’s a small guy that cares a lot, in particular to Lennie. His objective is to earn a lot of money by working at a ranch. George is also the one that takes care of delivering himself and Lennie the best ranch they could possibly think of. He and Lennie have a very strong friendship and are best friends, therefore he does everything together.
• Lennie is a less intelligent person in comparison to George. He is mentally retarded and behaves like a child. That’s why some people (including George) are annoyed by Lennie. He also doesn’t understand his power, that’s why the end led to a disaster. He relies a lot on George, that’s why George became like a lord for him.
The title of the book is literally translated to “van muizen en mannen” in Dutch. That doesn’t make sense at first sight. But as I mentioned, friendships are a very important thing in this book. Lennie had different friendships in the story, with both mice and with men (George).
Afterwards I liked the book a lot, but sometimes while I was reading it became boring. The beginning and the ending were very amusing though. There were also a lot of comparisons made, that was very nice to read because it made you think differently than you normally would. But I do want to mention that it isn’t a very exciting book, other than the beginning and ending it was quite boring. I can recommend this book but only if you are fine with reading some boring bits. Other than that is was very nice and instructive.
