Paper Towns

Setting
Aside from the first chapter, where Quentin tells you the basics of what happened the day before, Paper Towns is set in the present, in Orlando (Florida, United States of America).
The story mostly takes place near Jefferson Park. This is a park with a big neighbourhood around it. In the story there are some people looking for their friend (Margo), so that’s why there isn’t a steady place where most of the story takes place.

Theme
In Paper Towns there isn’t a main theme, because the whole story is an adventure that you experience with Quentin. This is because Margo doesn’t actually want to be found. So people could say that the main theme of the story is trying to find the mysterious Margo, but I think that that’s not true, because it actually wasn’t meant to happen.
Character
There are several important people in this book, but I am only going to describe the two that are the most important: Quentin and Margo.
Quentin (everybody calls him ‘Q’) is a shy and dorky guy. He isn’t very popular at school, but he gets around with his two best friends: Ben and Radar. He is well educated and doesn’t like to do ‘wrong’ things. Quentin has had a crush on the girl living in the house in front of him since he was nine. This girl is called Margo.
Margo is a very popular girl at Quentin’s school. She is known as a the girl with no fear. In the book Quentin often mentions her big blue eyes, her blonde hair and her skinny body.
Margo has lived in Orlando for a very long time, but she regularly disappears for a few days. So when she disappears for longer than a week, everybody starts to worry.
Title
The title of the book is based on something that Margo mentioned in the book.
If there’s a city somewhere that isn’t on a map, it doesn’t exist. But when it’s put on a map it magically exists.
Opinion
I thought the book was one of the best books I have ever read. Though I really dislike reading, this book had something that really grabbed me. There is a slight suspense, because you don’t know if Margo will be found, if she’s dead, or if she’ll just never be found again. I would definitely recommend this book to people of my age and a bit older. I wouldn’t recommend it to adults, but if they like these types of stories they should just read it.
