1984, By George Orwell

The setting:
The book was written in 1948 about 1984. The version of 1984 is pretty sinistre in my opinion, not a great environment to live in. Everybody constantly watching you, you can be thrown in a cell and tortured because of something you said in your sleep, everything organised for you and the same every single day. It doesn’t come across as horror but it does seem like a nightmare.

It doesn’t come across as horror but it does seem like a nightmare.

The theme:
Big Brother is watching you. I believe that this is quite close to the message of the story. The story was written to alter the idea of the kind of future that people are supposed to strive for when the book was written. I also think it has a unintentional message for the people who live right now. The big brother is watching you could refer to the fact that the government can monitor your every move because you might not know but you let your government know a lot about you somewhere around 30 times a day.
The characters:

Big Brother:
Big Brother is a character that doesn’t exist it is created to be loved and feared. Everyone is supposed to love him to the moon and back and they should love him more than anyone else. There is a catch to that because Big Brother is also very much feared. He is inspired by dictators like Hitler.

Winston Smith:
Winston Smith is the main character of the book. Winston Smith seems like a innocent man. Not because he strives for everything Big Brother wants him to do, but because he has a certain curiosity. He is not a rebellion for glory but he is sincere and that is one of the aspects that I really love about this book. That, in a world so twisted a character can stay really sincere.

The title:
The story behind the title is quite important to know before reading the book, to my opinion. Here’s why: the story 1984 was actually written in 1948, therefor he was actually predicting the future while writing this book because some things in this book should be considered more than they are.

My opinion:
I enjoyed reading this book a lot. It is unlike a book I have ever read before. A thing that you have to keep in mind before reading the book is that it isn’t your typical bedtime story, at least for me it was not. This book I will, for that and some other reasons, not recommend to every friend that I have. It has to be your cup of tea and I feel like a lot of people my age don’t like this type of book. As I mentioned before this book is quite intriguing because of the rare conditions in which it plays, the characters are really well worked out. An overall great book, a recommender. But if you don’t like it after all, just close the book.
