This is a fantastic story made even better by the graphic novel formatting. The illustrations bring the emotions to life, and the comic feel of the book reiterates the true heroism of the people depicted. I'm using this as part of the ALA Great Stories Club but will be sure to recommend it beyond the program. ...more

It's taken me way too long to read this. Loved how it juxtaposes Mr. Lewis as a young man at the start of the civil rights movement with the inauguration of President Obama. Looking forward to books 2 and 3.
Thank you, Mr. Lewis, Mr. Aydin, and Mr. Powell.

I am thrilled to have all this history in graphic novel form because it becomes accessible and relevant in a fresh way for teens.

Not very impressed with the cut & dried account of the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement. Like reading a comic book with very poor illustrations. A reread.
