I like approaching the Civil Rights Movement from Lewis's very personal perspective, and I like the way they framed it with Obama's inauguration. The art is just as personal and quiet, helping convey the tone of the non-violent movement; there's nothing flashy here, but it's still very affecting and moving. This is something that would really help lift up middle & high school classes about this period of time. ...more

This is a fantastic story made even better by the graphic novel formatting. The illustrations bring the emotions to life, and the comic feel of the book reiterates the true heroism of the people depicted. I'm using this as part of the ALA Great Stories Club but will be sure to recommend it beyond the program. ...more

This was a wonderfully drawn and nicely told story. This on-the-ground perspective of the bravery, determination, and commitment to nonviolence demonstrated by activists in the face of cruelty and aggression is awe-inspiring. ...more

Even better the second time - Gorgeous art, a compelling way to tell the story of John Lewis, and a brilliant start to the trilogy. I am really looking forward to book two.

A deep, though provoking read about how badly people were treated even just 50 years ago. I appreciated the honesty given in this book. I will definitely get the second book.

Not very impressed with the cut & dried account of the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement. Like reading a comic book with very poor illustrations. A reread.
