I like approaching the Civil Rights Movement from Lewis's very personal perspective, and I like the way they framed it with Obama's inauguration. The art is just as personal and quiet, helping convey the tone of the non-violent movement; there's nothing flashy here, but it's still very affecting and moving. This is something that would really help lift up middle & high school classes about this period of time.

This is a fantastic story made even better by the graphic novel formatting. The illustrations bring the emotions to life, and the comic feel of the book reiterates the true heroism of the people depicted. I'm using this as part of the ALA Great Stories Club but will be sure to recommend it beyond the program.

This was a wonderfully drawn and nicely told story. As the first in a trilogy, I am not all surprised with where it has stopped, but in part feel that I should reserve full judgement until I have read the next two installments. This first book covers the beginning of John Lewis' life up through college and the beginning of the sit-ins taking place at lunch counters throughout the Southern states.
