I L.O.V.E. this book!
When I first started it, my thoughts were "yet another YA book from Shannon Hale." I mean they're fun, well-written, and recommendable but not something that you get all excited about. It's like a strawberry shortcake compared to a slice of cheesecake. (Actually, that's a horrible analogy because I would choose strawberry anything or any other choice. Just totally delightful. Shannon Hale is great at writing wonderful, sweet fantasies. There are definitely some suspenseful/action filled scenes, but overall, it's just really pleasant and lovely.

Dashti makes this book a four. She's such a great heroine. Really enjoyed the world Hale created for her. There's some incredible storytelling going on here. The very end was a little too sappy for me, so heartless creature that I am, I'm knocking off a star. Fairy tale, schmairy tale.

I'd read this years ago, but revisiting it was a treat. It's a beautiful story, honest and funny and engaging, and I love the character of Dashti and the world she lives in.

Pretty good. After being locked in the tower Dashti and Lady Saren (whiny) finally escape. Outcome was pretty predictable, but all of the healing songs got annoying. Never heard of the original Grimm fairy tale Maid Maleen.
