This was a powerful story (in verse) of tremendous courage. Clara & her family came to America to escape the persecution of Jews in Russia. For women, it wasn't much better in America as they were still persecuted. Her father ruled the house & women were there to do the man's bidding. I had heard of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory story/fire, but not of Clara and her efforts to unionize the women working in the deplorable conditions in all of the shirtwaist factories. I'm not usually a fan of historical fiction, but I absolutely love this book. I love the way it is written in verse. It makes for a quick read, but it does not distract from the story at all. In fact I felt like it pulled me in more. As I read, I felt like I was there with Clara when she was walking the streets of New York. The descriptive wording is amazing. After reading this book I want to learn more about Clara Lemlich. I think it's a crime that there isn't more information about this courag

Disclaimer: I hate verse novels. And yet, even though I really wish it hadn't been in verse, I really liked this one. It's a pretty effective story inspired by a remarkable woman, and some of the poems I even really liked on their own.
