I absolutely loved this book. The cover is off-putting to me and it took me a little time to get started. My student told me to get past the cover - it's worth the read.
This book won an award for the audiobook production so I borrowed it in audio format. I listened while walking or working out in the gym, snorting and laughing out loud.

4.5 I loved this book SO MUCH. Strong female character. Realistic fiction emphasis on the real. Poetry. Issues dealt with in a straightforward manner (no euphemisms, I HATE euphemisms!)

Don't be turned off by the cover. This joins the ranks of other important YA books. Not only is it a well-written book with a compelling plot and a developed cast of characters, but this book makes an impact by touching on issues that plague today's teenagers. This is all set within the context of a teenage girl who struggles with her mother's traditional Mexican views: Gabi is su

I highly recommend this on audio. Great narration. It feels like you're just hanging out with Gabi.

I really loved this, though I wasn't expecting to. But the character is so authentic, and the voice so good, that I just tore through. I really love the exploration of sexism through Gabi, and I love how she grows and comes into her own.
Added - the audio version is AMAZING, I loved this book even more the second time. ...more

Seventeen-year-old Gabi Hernandez describes the highs and lows of her last year of high school. Told through journal entries, Quintero has constructed a candid and political YA novel that highlights double standards faced by women. The book felt preachy at times, but the characters were believable and well-developed.

Nope. Another book where the adults "don't understand me". Same complaints, same story.
