There are books that you read because you know that they're good for you, even though you know they'll cause pain. This is one of them.

Ho.ly.shit. This was a ROUGH read, y'all. I'm giving it 4 stars because it was really well written, and the story is very Important and Meaningful, but I do not know who I would recommend this to. I mean, Jesus, do you feel like being totally fucking depressed and outraged after finishing your fiction? I need to read something light and fluffy now...

I realize that this book was based on a true story, but it was so brutal & agonizing, I could not sleep when I finished it - horrible ending. The language (crude), brutality, racism - it was not pleasant reading. It started with a gas explosion in a white school that killed 300+ students, then went backwards with the time leading up to the explosion. Beautifully written and is an important story if not an easy read, but even so I didn't like it that much. It's worthy of four stars, but I thought it meandered too much in the beginning and had some missteps.
