Parssinen writes beautifully: in particular, the heavy atmosphere and feeling of entrapment in a small Southern refinery town is written so well that it feels claustrophobic at times. I also loved the passages about Mercy's deep love for basketball. That being said, I never quite got into the story or the characters. I didn't care deeply for them, though they were all fairly well constructed - mostly I just felt sick about how women are treated and desire for things to get moving or resolved. So

I almost read the last chapter after the 2nd one - a bad habit of mine if things are not going well & it might not end the way I want it to. However. I kept at it. Mercy's Maw Maw was not a nice person, hiding behind her church and the Bible to run their lives. After so much turmoil, friendships soured, basketball not looking positive, Maw Maw got her comeuppance in the end (as did Beau). Hard to put it down.

I rally enjoyed the second half, but I thought the beginning was a little too slow so it was hard to get into. I also wish SOME of the questions had been answered! But it's a pretty good read on the whole.
