Yes, I liked this story. A lot. What lowered the rating for me was actually the translation I was reading. I shouldn't be affected by that, I know, but when you come across (for instance) a place where an O has been replaced by a 0, you do get annoyed and distracted from the story in question. I enjoyed the first half of the book. The story had such a promise, it was enchanting, magical with a little bit of intrigue. Though a lot of the depictions of Prague were wrongly researched (names, meals etc.) and unrealistic (it almost seemed like my country right in the middle of Europe was back in the middle ages at times), innaccurate at best, I still at least loved the promising fantasy world ...more

Daughter of Smoke and Bone is essentially ideal for people who can't help but love the ridiculous, over the top insta-love of Romeo and Juliet, and want to see it play out in an angsty, dark, political, fantasy setting.
This book is nearly impossible to describe without spoiling, as it begins as something, but becomes something completely different. I was intrigued from page one, and I think this has the makings to be an incredible series about war and all the conplexities that come along with i ...more

I gave this story 3 stars, while I am being very modest with this rating, I feel that the story and the characters deserve the 3 stars. While the story was intriguing, I felt that some of the world building was lacking. Soon the character building was lacking. I could not find a character I liked enough to want to figure out what happens next. The plot was predictable from the beginning. I kept reading to give this book a chance. But I will not continue this series due to the predictability.

Umm...okay? WOW! This book has honestly blown me away and it is down-right one of my favorite books I have ever read!! Everything about it is amazing. I love the first book to series just because I love being able to discover things out and there is so much to take in with Daughter of Smoke and Bone but everything is able to be taken in at a perfect pace.

Karou...probably the most awesome hero ...more

I thought this book was very interesting. The beginning was a bit confusing but once I got into the middle it got so much better. If I could rate different sections of the book, I would give the end 2.5 the beginning 3 and the middle 4.5.
I loved the middle and that was where I couldn't put it down. This author writes very well but every time there was a flashback I sort of got lost.
The ending was the worst. One of the chapters switched from flashback to Karou in one paragraph and I was like " 3.5

Akiva's strange attraction to Karou only made sense after we found out that she's Madrigal, which didn't happen until the ending. Also what caused the attraction between Akiva and Madrigal in the first place? Natural Chemistry?
Akiva doesn't strike me as a very responsible angel. But I mostly liked him anyways.
I didn't see the Madrigal=Karou thing coming....but then again I guess her name "Hope" makes sense.
Karou is an interesting character. She seems like a strong person and I admire her art abilities. So only her body is human and it is made....so her soul is Chimaera. and why teeth? I wonder.
Zuzana is pretty cool. Again that perky, out-going, and generally awesome friend. I like her. Her boyfriend is a violinist! Violinists are awesome....if I do say so myself ^^
Her puppet show was incredible! I could just imagine all the art and effort she put into it. That's another thing I liked....the dedication of art.
But do they sketch nude models every day?
Issa, Brimstone and the rest of Karou's "family" is interesting. I genuinely believe they are kind and want peace. After all, they named her "Karou" which means "Hope" not only because she has a second life, but also because she believed in peace and ending the war between the Angels and Chimaera.
Razgut is creepy. Like as in I-don't-care-what-I-need-from-you-I'm-sure-I-can-live-without-it creepy.
Kaz is a stupid, self-loving, egotistical jerk face. I hate him.
The very end--Akiva ends up being the reason that Karou's entire family, good and bad, is dead. Karou hates him now? I don't know. I'll find out in the next book! ...more

I now see why people like this series so much I might have another author to delve into this book is pretty easy to get into but the shit hits the fan after chapter 30 but most of all I found myself wanting Karou and Akiva to just survive namely these two go through so much that you might wind up not wanting to put this book down.
