There is a subgenre of murder mysteries in Japan called 'honkaku'. It is where readers are actively invited to solve the mystery. So you will find that the author inserted a note or two in between chapters intentionally engaging the readers and egging them on. You will also find the clues provided also included diagrams (floor plans, etc).
