This is the story of Nora, the ward of a famous English surgeon, in the mid 1800s. She has a real talent for medicine herself, but, not allowed to complete her education or gain licensure in England, she goes to Bologna, Italy, for training, where she becomes especially adept in the use of ether and the new practice of cesarian section, both controversial at the time.
