Shelves: 2018, middle-grade, own-voices, audiobook, education-school, mystery, other-usa, umd-mlis, young-adult, read-but-not-finished-reviewing

This story details the tragedy of being caught up in a bad situation, the innocence lost once a young man spends time in prison, and the changed relationships and perspectives that stem from the nightmarish experience.

I really enjoyed listening to the full cast audio performance of this story. It's a relatively short story and makes a significant impact. It's not as recent as The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas or All American Boys by Jason Reynolds, but has a timeless quality to it.

First, I should start by saying that I am typically not a fan of young adult fiction due to short sentence structure and minimal depth. However, this book was fantastic. It is written from the viewpoint of a 16-year-old that is on trial for being a lookout in the murder of a drug store owner. This teen is an aspiring filmmaker and tells his story in the form of a screenplay and diary entries. This is simply a quick and good read with a non-traditional format.
