Bees picks up exactly where the last book left off - in 1779 on Frasers Ridge, NC. The Revolutionary War is in full swing, and much of the action is about to move down South. It ends in the spring of 1781. We get to spend time with our favorite characters - and meet several new characters - including some real life characters such as Francis Marion (aka the Swamp Fox).

To be honest, this novel started at a slower pace. Most of the first few hundred pages is about "catching the reader up", exposit Bees picks up exactly where the last book left off - in 1779 on Frasers Ridge, NC. The Revolutionary War is in full swing, and much of the action is about to move down South. It ends in the spring of 1781. We get to spend time with our favorite characters - and meet several new characters - including some real life characters such as Francis Marion (aka the Swamp Fox).

To be honest, this novel started at a slower pace. Most of the first few hundred pages is about "catching the reader up", exposition and everyday life on Fraser's Ridge in 1779. This bothered some readers, but personally, I love reading about everyday life on the Ridge. It was soooo good to see Bree and Jamie hunting together again. To see the Jem, Mandy and Germaine playing together again. The family is finally back together. And readers who complain about the slow pace should be careful what they wish for. Diana has said that the shape of this book is a snake - and boy can that snake bite when you least expect it.

And this book answers many of the questions that readers have been asking for the past seven years .....
- What is in Brianna's bag?
- How did Brianna and Roger and family get back to the Ridge?
- What happens when Jenny meets Roger - again?
- What happens when Bree meets William - again?
- Will Roger become a Presbyterian minister?
- Is Ben (the Duke of Pardoe's son and William's cousin) really dead?
- Who is Ezekiel Richardson? Is he a bad guy or a good guy or somewhere in-between?
- Will there be repercussions from what Jamie did at the Battle of Monmouth (in MOBY)?
- How will Jamie continue to walk between the fires now that he is a known American/Continental leader, but still landlord to tenants split between Loyalist and American leanings?
- Can Fergus continue to walk between those same fires as a printer in Charleston?
- Is Swiftest of Lizards really Ian's son?
- Is Claire going to come into her blue-light healing powers (Hint - the color of the book is Blue)
- Are Jamie and Claire still in love and going hot and heavy in their late 50's/early 60's? (come on - you know the answer to this one already!)

This novel isn't perfect. There are a few continuity errors. It can be repetitive. And we saw very little (VERY little) of Lizzie and her husbands or Dottie and Denzel. But Diana's writing still has the power to take me the greatest heights ... and then the greatest lows (and the power to heal my soul).

Another weighty tome from the irrepressible Ms Gabaldon with further adventures of all the characters we have become rather addicted to over the series. I have similar feelings about this book as I did about the past few novels: while I adore Claire and her irreverent sense of humour, her medical skills and her love for the gallant highlander Jamie Fraser; the American War of Independence is boring me to distraction. It may have been entertaining enough had it filled the pages of one novel, but ...more

This was a long one. However, I just love listening to this series, the reader is so wonderful that I can't imagine reading the pages and not listening so the length doesn't bother me.

I'm not sure if this book is longer than any of the others - I haven't really compared them. Lots of things are going on. The Fraser's are building a new house after the old one burned down. The Revolution is heating up with quite a few British wins and things are tense on the ridge with both factions settled there ...more
