After being pleasently surprised by The House of Mirth I was keen to read another Wharton and this was the one that my library had available. Unfortunately I did not enjoy this novel nearly as much.

There were so many rehashed scenes and what was really quite a simple plot was spread as thin as possible over nearly 400 pages! I do appreciate that this was to really hammer home the internal conflict of the characters, particularly Anna, but it was just so overdone.

Disappointed

I adore Edith Wharton, but ths one, let me down. The whiny female character drove me to distraction, and the melodramatic story left me rolling my eyes, Clearly, even a gifted author can pen a yawner. And what the heck does the title mean???
