***1/2: more swashbuckling, high adventure from the pen of Nick Horth — this tale was chock full of the type of sword-and-sorcery fun that I’ve come to expect from him. Very Fritz Leiber in tone and action. Lack of a proper ending keeps this from ****, it just kinda stops — no cliffhanger, no resolution; reads more like an editor said “you’re over your word count.”

I can't remember if Arika Zenthe was always the most interesting character from the Callis and Toll series or if I only think that now after reading this book. Both she and the novella as a whole do great work cementing the Scourge Privateers as a living, breathing faction in the Age of Sigmar - with their own goals and ideals and shortcomings. It doesn't so much show them in a new light, but rather in a more clear one. (Though I reckon the privateers wouldn't be a fan of you looking too deep in ...more
