Elizabeth Taylor’s final novel is a study of middle class snobbishness and selfishness, perceptively observed and carefully written. Amy is on holiday when her husband Nick dies suddenly, and she is supported by a younger American woman, Martha. When they return to London, Amy is reluctant to continue the acquaintance but their lives somehow remain connected until further tragedy occurs.

This was my first Elizabeth Taylor and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Not a word is out of place, not one character is totally likeable nor are their choices commendable. Nevertheless it is a compelling read with an important theme: trying to avoid negative emotions is counterproductive. Taylor is skilful at creating believable milieux and realistic characters. This is a book I would recommend.

Taylor's final novel which is a reflection on guilt, obligation and life. Started stronger than it ended. Quick read.
