Amy is neither brave enough to cut her nor interested/kind enough to be a real friend to her, and so the one-sided "friendship" continues until quite a startling development near the end of the book.

This was my first Elizabeth Taylor and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Not a word is out of place, not one character is totally likeable nor are their choices commendable. Nevertheless it is a compelling read with an important theme: trying to avoid negative emotions is counterproductive. Taylor is skilful at creating believable milieux and realistic characters. This is a book I would recommend.
