I am sorry that this is my girl's introduction to Wharton, whom I loved because I read House of Mirth in college, rather than having to be bogged down with this in middle school. Is it just the length that leads to thinking this is a better choice? I'm glad that somehow I was spared. All the long framing story to build tension is so out of step with modern sensibilities - gone is the family reading of a post-work evening by the fire over which the suspense and hints can be wondered about as it i ...more
