What a boring book. Nothing really happens in the whole book. Hepzibah Pyncheon opens a shop, her cousing Phoebe comes to live with her and then her brother Clifford returns home and they all hate Judge Pyncheon. I could care less about any of the characters and have no idea why this is one the 1001 books to read before you die list.

A Gothic story by New England author Nathaniel Hawthorne features the house of seven gables which is a real home in New England that was in the Hawthorne family. The story is set in the 19th century but has flashbacks back to the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. The book is considered Gothic and a mild bit of horror with the dark house in disrepair and no sunlight with two old people who are as good as dead because they have no life outside of the home. I hated The Scarlet Letter when I first read it. Hawthorne never met a run-on sentence he didn't like. However, knowing that, I was better prepared to read this book and I really liked it. An ancient family curse, a love story, a ghost story, a grumpy spinster...what more do you need? 62/1,001
