This was a good book, with wonderful descriptions and great suspenseful scenes. The realism is also impressive in a novel written at this time, almost like reading Thomas Hardy. Gaskell is a bit too overbearing with approach to the struggles of the poor and the gap between the classes, and like Dickens in Hard Times she doesn't quite know what to make of unions and the struggles for justice that form a central element of the novel. I have never been fond of Victorian literature (apart from Dickens maybe); I often find the style too heavy, even pompous to read. And I have to admit I was apprehensive before starting to read this novel. However, Mary Barton provided me with a nice surprise. First, the setting in the harsh living conditions of the lower Manchester working class at the dawn of unionism and Marxism.
