Gilbert Markham is a cheerful and carefree young man who becomes fascinated by the mysterious Helen Graham, who has moved into the gloomy Wildfell Hall with her young son and female servant. As malicious gossip and hints begin to circulate about Mrs Graham, Gilbert defends her stoutly but finds doubts arising in his mind as his affection for her grows.
