What Members Thought

Celia
As you can see, I liked this book enough to read it twice. The second time was for my book club. The members who attended the meeting did not like it at all. (That was two votes against and one abstain - she hadn't even read the book). The ones who did read and comment thought it 'too predictable.

I found the book CHILLING. These events could really happen, at least to my way of thinking.

In a dystopian world of conservative Christians, the government is overthrown (killed) and a new law of order

Bryan--The Bee’s Knees
I debated between one and two stars, but given the amount of thought I put into the book, I eventually went with two.

I would think that this book really needs no synopsis, but just in case: an unnamed narrator describes her life in the not-far future when the U.S. has broken apart into smaller theocratic states. 'Gilead', the state where the narrator lives is, from the sound of it, a state run on terror and strict adherence to the Bible--strict enough that, when the shortage of new births reache

I know this is not the popular opinion, but this one wasn't my favorite. The scattered thought process and the jumping around was very unsettling to me. The overall story was enjoyable and very thought provoking which is keeping this as a so-so and not a pan. Not sure if this was due to listening to this as opposed to actually reading. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ ...more

Creepy, creepy, creepy!

I listened to this on audiobook, read by Claire Danes. Although I enjoyed it, I'm sure I missed some details that I would have picked up by reading it myself. That, and Claire Danes has such a distinctive voice for me, especially after watching Homeland, that I could only picture the main character as blonde haired Danes.
Incredible ideas in this novel illustrated so well by Atwood. I would recommend this book to others for sure.

Amazing and haunting.

If this book was food, it would be dinner theater!!

Margaret Atwood crafted this story so well it that it felt so real! She can twist events and I had no idea where the story was going. At first, it was a little tricky to get used to the various plot lines and lack of quotation marks. But it works so well once you can get used to it.
