Toni Morrison has always been one of my favorite writers, and I mourned her recent passing. Sula is not her greatest work (that, in my opinion, would be Beloved), but it is a wonderful story of growing up as a black woman and compares two life choices: be the obedient (occasionally battered wife) or become the vamp. Sula chooses the latter while Nel, her best friend chooses the former. After a tragic incident by the river, the two women's lives diverge and we see the Bottom transform over time f

This is my second book by Toni Morrison. I have read The Bluest Eye which I was able to connect to much better than this one.
The story takes place in a small rural town in Ohio from 1919 to 1965. The beginning of the book I liked very much. Toni Morrison paints a very vivid picture of the town life. Much of the story centers around Sula and Nels, two girls who grow up in this town. Much happens between the girls and not much of it is happy. This is a small book that packs a big punch. T ...more

A vivid novel about an intense female friendship that ends in what seems like betrayal. Sula is a poweful charismatic character. She and Nel have a very close, sonewhat disturbing friendship growing up.
In adult life, Nel settles into an impoverished, unsatisfactory marriage, reflecting the impoverished thwarted lives of those in her community. Sula leaves, we later learn,to go to college, but when Sula returns, she takes what she wants from everyone and is feared and despised
