DH Lawrence isn't just giving us a close 3rd person, he is reaching for an intimate, embodied experience of his characters. I feel him straining for stream of consciousness - Mrs Dalloway is just around the corner. But he hangs on to too much explanation for that - he remains outside, a narrator thinking about what makes a person tick, what the religious, sexual, intellectual impulses are that drive actions, choices and decisions. Probably why this was deemed so pornographic - lots of lusty feel
