Nicely-written adventure story that revolves around preventing German agents in the UK from getting and sending some vaguely-described intel to Germany on the eve of World War One. Mr Hannay is sort of a forerunner of Indiana Jones.

Having seen parts of the movie but never the whole thing, I had no preconceived notion of the novel and found it highly entertaining and suspenseful. A great afternoon read.

This book is a classic spy thriller, in which an ordinary guy from South Africa gets drawn out of his boredom while vacationing in England. He meets a man who says he's a spy, and soon afterward the spy is killed, leaving the vacationer with the responsibility of carrying out the spy's mission, while on the run for the murder of the spy himself.
