Nicely-written adventure story that revolves around preventing German agents in the UK from getting and sending some vaguely-described intel to Germany on the eve of World War One. Mr Hannay is sort of a forerunner of Indiana Jones.
This book is a classic spy thriller, in which an ordinary guy from South Africa gets drawn out of his boredom while vacationing in England. He meets a man who says he's a spy, and soon afterward the spy is killed, leaving the vacationer with the responsibility of carrying out the spy's mission, while on the run for the murder of the spy himself. I guess it belongs on the 1001-list for some sort of historical importance? The beginning of the spy genre? I wasn't much entertained and it left me with nothing.
