This book from before WWI follows a group of painters/decorators in an English town who are employed when business is good and dropped when it's not, so that although most of them were skilled or semi-skilled tradesmen, their average wages were barely above starvation levels. They are called 'philanthropists' ironically in the title, because their work enriches their employers much more than themselves.
