This book from before WWI follows a group of painters/decorators in an English town who are employed when business is good and dropped when it's not, so that although most of them were skilled or semi-skilled tradesmen, their average wages were barely above starvation levels. They are called 'philanthropists' ironically in the title, because their work enriches their employers much more than themselves. We meet the families too, and there are some heartrending stories, but with some humour mixed
