Troubling in many ways, but deeply moving and written in long, flowing, beautiful strokes of prose.
The unnamed narrator is a 15-year-old Spanish boy in the 16th century who signs on as a cabin boy for a voyage of discovery. When his shipmates are attacked by cannibalistic natives, he is taken not exactly prisoner but as a kind of witness. His impressions of the attitudes and lives of the tribe, imperfectly understood, form the majority of the book.
