Novella based on Duras' own early life in French Indo-China, now Vietnam. While the title suggests this is primarily about the relationship of the teenage girl with her lover, an older Chinese man, it is also about her relationship with her family, particularly her remote and mentally ill mother, and about a nostalgia for the place she grew up.

I rated it 4 stars, it was an evocative, fascinating read, making one aware of memory, meaning, and beauty, both physical and the beauty of language.
