So, I didn't really expect to love this. I read it because it's on the list of 1001 Books to Read Before You Die and I wasn't, to be honest, expecting much. I'm oddly not very into fantasy, and especially high fantasy type stuff. I'm not sure why: in so many ways I feel like I am exactly the kind of person to be a fantasy reader and as a teen I was obsessed with Pern, but somehow it didn't translate to any other fantasy series.

So I do not enjoy fantasy, and started this with a little trepidation--would I even finish? Would I just power through?
But this turned out to be a pretty quick read. The reading level is not high, and there are interesting characters and a good story. There are also 100 pages of battle (1/3 of the book!), which was a bit much for me, but I got through it.

Although I am not usually a fan of military fantasy, I really enjoyed Legend. It examined what it means to be a Hero and a Legend. As the characters stand up to impossible odds, they must learn about their own flaws and strengths. What does it take to be a Hero and become a legend? Can a man live up to the stories and legend that have been told about him? Should you stand and fight when failure is assured? I would definitely recommend Legend.
A fantasy story by David Gemmell written in the seventies when the author was told he might have cancer. He wrote it to distract but also as metaphor for the battle against death. The author later found out he did not have cancer, put away the book and later resurrected it and finished it up and published it in 1984. He went on to write a series called the Drenai Tales. What a surprise! A fantasy novel that I quite enjoyed. I listened to an audible version, narrated by Sean Barrett, who was easy on the ear. He was able to differentiate the characters very well. There were great holes in the story, it was quite unbelievable (but then I find fantasy difficult to believe anytime) and the fight scenes were hard to visualise - but that could quite conceivably be my lack of imagination rather than a fault of the author!
