Wow...as if this wasn't difficult enough to read...I was supposed to finish it in January (for a challenge)...I was only about 1/4 of the way into it and my Kindle Fire bit the dust...I guess I just read it to death. Then I crazily ordered a Kindle Paper White instead of a new Fire and I didn't like that at all (guess I just like all the bells and whistles) and had to reorder a Fire. 3.5 stars. I enjoyed the book, but agree with those who felt that the pace lagged in parts. The interior life of Lucy Snowe was depicted so realistically and the ambiguity of her background and fate were so lifelike that I believe it should be on the list, but understand why it has been dropped
I quite like Charlotte Bronte's heroine in Villette. Lucy Snow, apparently retiring, contrite and accepting of her fate is, in fact, a passionate, insecure, dreaming thinker. She watches, philosophizes, plans, and dreams. Most of her dreams seem to come to naught. Fascinating.
