Ambitious novel set in Yorkshire during the Napoleonic Wars when government action caused great hardship to the textile industry in the North of England. I chose to read this book because it is described as the story of a strong woman. This is true, but for me the book is flawed and not terribly satisfactory. We do not meet Shirley until the middle of the book. This made me wonder why the book was called Shirley instead of Caroline after the character our narrator spends the most time describing. This was an homage to Charlotte Bronte's sister and seems to have been fairly autobiographical. I really liked the character of Mrs. Pryor, who was evid
