This is not a happy story. I generally prefer my books to have thread of hope and triumph, but this is full of loneliness, pain, no good options. I just feel so bad for Fitz. Also, kinda sucks that all the "good" people are either killed off, neglect Fitz continuously, or just lack smarts which allows those with wicked intentions to flourish.

Very well written, but almost nothing happens for most of the book… even calling the ending a ‘climax’ feels like overselling it.
Again, the writing is so good that I’m not very invested in these characters and hence will probably pick up book 2 at some point in time. But was expecting a bit (or a lot ) more excitement than what this book delivered.

Excellent. A great read. I was looking for a fantasy series to tide me over until George RR Martin hurries himself up and writes the next GofT volume. I'd already tried another fantasy author's work (I won't mention which) and found it lacking, but this promises great things.
