Review- Another fantastic instalment from the Mercedes Thompson world. This one is actually set outside of Washington state. Oooh, a new setting since Mercy is kidnapped across an ocean! How Ms Briggs can make kidnapping her central plot point for nearly every book but still manage to make it different and exciting every time is exceptional.
This one is a dual timeline, which is also new. It's told from both Mercy and Adam's perspectives. I thought that might be annoying but it was actually okay. I actually liked seeing things from Adam's viewpoint.
We're introduced to some more new characters. They definitely add to the book. In fact, one was such a surprise that I even went back and re-read ALL of his bits. Funny thing is I did that the last/first time I read this too.
My other favourite thing is that Mercedes is getting back to her old self. The poor girl has been through some horrific things that would subsume anyone's sense of humour and gaiety. For a few of the books she was so serious and earnest, she'd lost her sense of humour. At the time I'd read them, it kind of annoyed me. I wanted the easy and fun Mercy. But what we actually got was far better. We got actual character development and honesty in an urban fantasy shifter series. If you think about it, there are a lot of uf series out there where the leads have the most outrageous and horrible things happen to them and they bounce back with snark. At best, the character might refer to what has happened and how it affected them but not really show it in behaviour. Ms Briggs not only tells us but has definitely shown us how Mercy was affected. Her personality changed over a four or five book period and it is only now in book ten that it feels Mercy is coming out of the trauma.
I look forward to book 11.
