First of all, this is juvenile fiction. I mean seriously, why am I reading it? And, then, recommending it to everyone I know? Because it is a really fun, enjoyable book set in an interesting world. I kept forgetting that our intrepid heroine was 12 years old. In fact, she could truly be any age.
I loved the characterizations here. The crazy uncle, the thoughtful niece, the loving parents and the skeleton detective. Who drives a bentley. And sometimes, a canary mobile. This book is just a whole b ...more

This reads like a younger teen novel (Stephanie is 12), yet there are some heavy issues brought up (who decides when to start a war?) and it is so humorous that I feel it can be read comfortable by a wide range of ages.

She looked at Skulduggery. “You don’t know what it is, do you?”
“I told you what it is, it’s a horrible monster. Now shut up before it comes over here and eats us.”
It has everything. From a talking skeleton who can do magic to a 12-year-old who knows what to do and when to do it to a villain who's hellbent on destroying humanity, the story is never once dull and boring.

Fun read! Constant action and plenty of humor. Our library has it in juvenile fiction, but there's enough killing and torture (or talk of torture) that I would recommend it for more mature readers. The heroine is supposed to be 12. I have never known a 12 YO who was a tough and mature as that. I expect I'll read book 2. There are 10 books in the series, I may get tired of the cast before then.
