This was an interesting book - in an interesting world with interesting characters. Unfortunately, nothing really stood out for me. Except the descriptions. Mr. Green painted wonderful pictures of his world with few words and descriptive phrases, yet I found myself with clear pictures in my head in several instances throughout the novel. This was a really fun, really quick read! While I think it suffered a bit from "first-novel-in-a-series" syndrome, the idea behind everything is stellar. The Nightside really draws you in and makes you want to know more, even if it is incredibly dangerous. My biggest qualms about this novel could be boiled down to 2 things:

I would rate this a 3 1/2 out of 5 stars really. John is quite an intriguing character with a talent that isn't thoroughly described in this book. I am left with many questions, but I feel it ties me to John in a way because he too has questions. Where did his gift come from? What is the significance of his mother? Green tries to present John as this badass tough character who doesn't need to walk the dangerous streets with a weapon because his power alone is terrifying to all, however his power I would rate this a 3 1/2 out of 5 stars really. Where did his gift come from? What is the significance of his mother? Green tries to present John as this badass tough character who doesn't need to walk the dangerous streets with a weapon because his power alone is terrifying to all, however his power appears greatly limited. And it really isn't explained either. He can push a "3rd eye" perspective out to find people, but how does that make him this tough, and even feared character?
The attempted love interest in Joanna is a huge let down. It was like Green tried to throw in romance to appease to readers, however there is no real romance. John saves Joanna on numerous accounts, where Joanna really seems to become just a liability and a nuisance. The last chapter really was the biggest let down in regards to Joanna...Much was built up, to only come to a crashing halt. I shall not spoil though. Suzie Shotgun is an easily likable badass female, but I was left craving her back story or real significance. She's presented as just an acquaintance of John, who likes yet dislikes him, like every other Nightside inhabitant, and randomly shows up to help save the day.
The Nightside is well developed and presents the reader with what I feel most people would love: an escape from reality where everyone can live freely amongst themselves without the judgment of society. With it plethora of danger, a sense of intrigue and excitement brews when imagining such a world. Perhaps that's the idea of good people thirsting for a dangerous thrill.
This being the first in a series, and also a quick read-would have been quicker had I not been more engaged in more exciting and faster paced books-I will still give the rest in the series a try as this book foreshadows to more that may happen in the future. ...more
