What Members Thought
Eh, is this book for serious? Was everyone reading some book other than the one I did?
This is supposed to be some kind of African Game of Thrones. At least it's often hyped as such.
Instead, I got something like an obscene cross between:
~ the Aboriginal myths of the African tribes,
~ blatant YA intermixed with hopelessly flat adult situations seemingly happening on each page,
- pointlessly gorish description of a bunch of adventures happening all over the place,
~ writings of some emigree who hasn ...more

DNF - Stopped at page 200
Every character just felt like doomed chess pieces and please realize you aren’t watching the “game” in order. I tried to get past the flippancy around intense, gritty subjects. I tried to focus past the abrasive, testosterone-filled banter and appreciate the shock factor of his creative world. For me, the immense ick factor was not the fantastic escapism I was looking for. :(

I did it! I read this book from start to finish. It was an intriguing reading experience because the narrative style took some time to get used to, but once I did I was able to keep track of everything that was happening in the story. And, A LOT of things are happening in this story! The hunt for the missing boy is what recaptures your attention throughout your reading of the story, but the characters, the overall plot, and the world-building adds on to the continuing growth of modern sword-and-
