I enjoyed this so much more reading this as and adult then when I first read this back in the Vampire craze around 2008. Elena wasn't as 'bad' as I remembered reading it the second time. Somehow I remembered her being so annoyingly self-centred that she was almost impossible to relate to. Now, I found myself relating to her so much more. Maybe it's because I'm older and have accepted my flaws - them being that I can be self centred? Anyway, this is getting too personal.

The Plot:

The Plot:
This is defiantly a character driven plot, so if you came for a intriguing story you'll probably leave feeling disappointed. This novel was basically the set up for the rest of the series, establishing the magic system in the world and also the introduction to the characters and their backstories. The majority of this is told through flashbacks, so if they're not you're think you'll find yourself frustrated. I personally love flashbacks so I found they transitioned nicely and were interesting. It ends on a cliffhanger, which would normally annoy me but because this book was such a easy read I didn't mind.

The plot centres around Elena Gilbert, who is intrigued by the new mysterious guy with a dark secret that starts school. She's determined to catch his attention, but it seems he's trying everything he can to avoid her. There's some mysterious attacks and murders, adding a 'who done it' to the story.

Characters:
Elena: The main female character. Not as annoying as I remember, on reflection I think people hated her as a character because she's confident of herself, self assured and she know's what she wants. I guess she was just ahead of her time to be appreciated.
Stefan: The main male character. Brooding, self-loathing, everything you need for a romantic drama. He hides a dark secret and believes he's damned. That's all I can really say about him.
Damon: The bad guy. Love him already but I may be a bit biased. Didn't get to see much of him, and it was a bit predictable when he shows up.
Caroline, Bonnie & Meredith: The friends. They're cute, not much to say on them. They all seemed to blend into one.

Summary:
If you're looking for a easy to read, romantic drama with accents of the supernatural then look no further. Written before Twilight, the writing is original and the character's back stories intriguing. The early starting of a love triangle between two brothers, one good who believes he's bad and one bad who revels in it. ...more
