This book surprised me. Not the story, really, it was mostly expected. The characters are rich and they act perfectly within their design. The plot makes Rome seem much smaller than it probably was and the only really far-fetched part I thought was the length of time Arius remained a successful gladiator. Seems like 8 years was a lot longer than anyone would have really lasted in that job.
