I really missed a good UF!

I admit, it took me a bit to get into the story. But well, once I got there, I couldn't get out!
I absolutely loved it!
Loved the world it created and the characters, even the "case" was a damn interesting one (and that's not very easy to find).

This series has a lot of potential, can't wait to get to the next one! ...more

This is one of those series that I've seen around for a while, but somehow never got around to starting. Now I have, I'm glad I did.

Toby Daye, apart from her weird name, is not your typical urban fantasy heroine. That is, practically everything that comes out of her mouth is not a smartass comment. Nor does she spend half the book lusting over >1 hot male body. To be fair, she also spends a lot of the first part of the book whining and being self-pitying, which is also not typical, but less posi This is one of those series that I've seen around for a while, but somehow never got around to starting. Toby Daye, apart from her weird name, is not your typical urban fantasy heroine. That is, practically everything that comes out of her mouth is not a smartass comment. Nor does she spend half the book lusting over >1 hot male body. To be fair, she also spends a lot of the first part of the book whining and being self-pitying, which is also not typical, but less positive. However, since the woman spent 14 years as a koi, resulting in her losing her fiance and daughter (as they now - unsurprisingly - won't speak to her), this is perhaps understandable. To be honest, I think it makes her more realistic: if you're honest, how do you think you would deal with that kind of situation? With a witty quip and a readiness to move on an start kicking ass immediately? Probably not. In the end, perhaps I didn't quite like Toby, but I was interested enough in her to want to carry on reading.

There are many supporting characters, and (hooray) we have at least one fae who doesn't take arbitrary, illogical politicking to the level of an art form. There is the concept that liege loyalty goes both ways: the master has responsibilities to the servant, as well as the other way around. Some characters are more developed than others, but there are definite indications that many of them will be back and will play significant roles in further books.

The plot... to be honest, I figured out Whodunnit quite early on. As plots go, it wasn't very complex, and Toby didn't do much detecting really. A lot of running around and getting injured, yes; detecting, no. However, it was enjoyable. And it was clear that there was Stuff Going On What We Aren't Getting Told - although the immediate problem was solved, it's pretty obvious that it was only a single battle, not the whole war. There were enough loose ends to make it obvious that there will be a longer story arc over several books.

What really made this book a four-star read for me was the writing. It's hard to pin down, but it felt solid. Part of the slowness getting started, I think, was McGuire giving Toby and her world the kind of depth and detail that is the foundation for a really good series. ...more

I've heard such good things about this series and I even REALLY liked this author's book Feed. So, during a book hangover after reading Lake Silence by Anne Bishop (seriously that series kills my desire to read anything else), I noticed the library had this book in and I found myself interested in reading it. I'll pick up anything I'm interested in reading during a book hangover. My excitement began high and slowly dropped after chapter 4....

At first I thought that this book should be made into a TV series. It is a solid urban fantasy with quirky characters and interesting mythology. By the end it went with a little drama but I liked it quite a bit.

I read this back in February [2018] for a Pick-It-For-Me challenge and loved it so much that I depleted (more like exceeded) my book budget for the month and got caught up with the entire series within the following weeks. I fell head over heels in love with these characters and I’m still thinking about them now. (I have what I’m going to call a semi-book-hangover, meaning that I’ve been able to read and enjoy other things since, but I always go back to thinking about this series afterwards.)

This was my first time reading this author. It didn’t knock my socks off but it was a good start to a new series.

With that said, I really liked Toby/October, and not just because I was born in October also but because her character was believable, she felt real. By the end, I was also rooting for young Rue. The world building was a bit slow for me but it was interesting and very intricate with cool 80’s references.
