I tried several times to read this book. Each time going further and further into the book, waiting for something exciting to happen. People were all talking about how wonderful it was and I was just bored stiff and dreaded opening it. I cant even give in one star...I never finished it.

I honestly have no idea where to begin with this review so stick with me. This is one of those hard reviews, where I’m struggling to put into words how I really feel about this book and it not be a confusing mess.

I really do love the storyline and the concept of this book; however, I am not sure that Diana Gabaldon’s writing style is for me. It’s possible that having watched the show corrupted my ability to form a picture in my mind because throughout the book, I would see the show playing out I honestly have no idea where to begin with this review so stick with me. This is one of those hard reviews, where I’m struggling to put into words how I really feel about this book and it not be a confusing mess.

I really do love the storyline and the concept of this book; however, I am not sure that Diana Gabaldon’s writing style is for me. It’s possible that having watched the show corrupted my ability to form a picture in my mind because throughout the book, I would see the show playing out (the actors, the location, the scene in general) in my head. I just couldn’t picture out what she had written and I’m not sure if it was just the way she wrote it or if it had anything to do with me watching the show.

It was really nice seeing Claire’s point of view, although I found her to be a little annoying in the book and Jamie to be a lot goofier than I expected him to be. I saw them both in a completely different light. While I did find Claire to be a little annoying, the woman has SPINE. There is no denying that. She is not one to complain about her circumstances, but to either make the best of them or fight like hell to get out of them. Jamie is the same way. He very much has the attitude of “You can’t change what is or what has happened, so why dwell on it”

The detail in this book is magnificent. You also might wanna pull out your handy dandy dictionary every now and then (does anybody still own those. I’m not ashamed to say I had to. But, when I say the detail is magnificent, that is another way of saying that this book is not for the faint of heart. Believe me...

While in some scenes, that can work against you (in a way), it can definitely work for you in others. It wasn’t a hot and fast paced romance; you really get to know the ins and outs of their everyday lives. It can all be a little slow at times, but she will keep you turning the pages. In my opinion, it did pick up eventually.

Despite Claire traveling through the stones, this is very much a whirlwind romance of her living in 18th century.

Recommendation: I found the pacing to be the hardest part sometimes, so if you can muddle through, give it a shot. If you love romances and you love seeing them develop, this would be a good book to check out too.

December 2014 - trying this book again!

Too slow for me. Forced myself to get half way through this estremely long book. I quit. Oh well, I wasted an Audible.com credit. I'm going to re-read the last three of Karen Marie Moning's Highlander series to get ready for the new release next week of Into The Dreaming. ...more

I am a big fan of the TV show so I really wanted to read the book. This is one of the perfect audio books to listen why you are in the car doing homework. It is so relaxing and such a beautiful book. I can wait to continue the series. And dear lord, dont we just love Jamie?
