This novel is a character study and a coming-of-age story that is not terribly heavy on plot. It is literary fiction at its best; it reminds me of Marilynne Robinson. Much to my surprise, I was delighted with this novel. It is not what would normally be my cup of literary tea, but I very much enjoyed it.

My Brilliant Friend is set in a poor neighborhood in 1950s Naples and focuses on two young girls, Elena and Lila, as they grow into adolescence while their friendship waxes and wanes.

Basically all my podcasts told me to read this. I enjoyed the descriptions of the close knit neighborhood and the intense childhood friendship, but I also felt a little removed from it all. I still recommend it, and look forward to reading the others in this series.
