This novel is 1980s pop culture brought to life as a work of futuristic fiction. Besides all the references and homages to the television, movies, music, video games, and books of the 80s, Ready Player One plays out like a science fiction movie from the 80s, and because of this, it is rather predictable in many ways, though still quite enjoyable.

If you boil down the synopsis of the movie and book they would be the same, but the book is quite detailed and many of those details make the difference. The movie was really good, and so was the book. The book has a darker edge to it. I would recommend them both. If you haven't seen/read either, see the movie first. I think reading the book first would make you mad at the movie writers, which is unfair because it was a good adaptation of the script to fit a two plus hour time limit.
